Questions from the gym: My back hurts, should I still come to the gym?

Updated: Nov 24

A comment we have been getting lately, is that people who are experiencing general back pain are becoming afraid to attend the gym. I want to give you a few reasons why continuing to attend the gym might be the best option even if your GP tells you that's its not! Firstly most GPs are in the business of keeping you as safe as possible and when you tell them you have a sore back and ask if you should attend the gym of course they say no because they 1. think that there is a risk of you hurting it more 2. don't know what "gym" you go to 3. don't have time to explain the risks and benefits and how it can actually help.

NextStep isnt just a "gym". NextStep has specialized equipment and highly qualified exercise physiologists who understand the human body and the biomechanics of back pain and what we can do to still have a workout and not aggravate your injury. Not only that but we can identify why it may have started and what we can do to make sure it doesnt happen again.

General lower back pain can actually get worse if you do nothing. “If you stop being active for a long time, the muscles in your back become weak and you become less fit, and this can make your back pain worse. Not moving can make your back more stiff and painful. Unfortunately our health system is also pretty stressed at the moment and it can take a long time to see a specialist to diagnose your back pain during which time if your inactive it can lead to a number of other health concerns not too mention losing all the progress you have made, we can help to make sure that you can keep moving in some capacity.

Bottom line is, take the time to rest immediately after a back injury but then give your trainer a call or message and ask about the best options for you before deciding that doing nothing is going to be better than doing something!
